his father was a farmer and a horse trader.
mat had something of a bad reputation, known for trouble in the village. starting from pranks and drinking when he was younger and leading to gambling, women, and the like as he grew older.
he wouldn't amount to much of anything.
he and his friends, rand al'thor and perrin aybara, were dragged from their home after an attack centered on them from the dark one hit their village.on the road. in shadar logoth. horn blower.they traveled with Moraine Sedai, her warder Lan al'Mandragoron, egwene al'vere, a gleeman Thom Merrlin, and emond's field wisdom Nynaeve al'Meara. they were on the road for some time before they travelled into the cursed city of shador logoth. wanting to discover treasure there he instead found a cursed dagger that nearly consumed and killed him. after being split up with the rest of the group he traveled with rand on their own for over a month. where they had to hold each other up. through mat's curse, rand's sickness, and other troubles.
they were reunited with the rest of the group. they came to the borderlands where unknown to mat, rand discovered he was the dragon reborn.
he, rand, and perrin were forced onto the hunt for the horn of valere, an artifact said to be to call back the heroes of the age of legends for the last battle. mat, near dead because of the dagger's curse only went to abtain the dagger again that had been stolen by dark friends. rand recovered both artifacts. and in the mist of a fight with the forsaken and the ever victorious army from the seanchan empire mat blew the horn for aid. and the heroes did come. this causes the horn and mat to be tied together. but it's a fact that's not known by most.mat was then taken to tar varlon. so that the aes sedai could heal him from the effects of the dagger.luck. ta'veren. memory loss. the stone of tear. memories.being ta'veren has given mat extraordinary luck. in gambling, in battle. finding things or sealing deals. ta'veren make the pattern shape to them. even moving those around them.
along with that mat hears the sound of dice rolling in his head, as a warning for danger or simply fate.leaving the tower on the behest of elayne trakand, daughter heir to the throne of andor, and egwene along with nynaeve to deliever a letter to elayne's mother he discovers his extraordinary luck. upon delievering the letter he stumbles on a plot to murder the daughter heir. following the assassins to tear mat goes on a mission to rescue elayne, nynaeve, and egwene from the stone of tear where they were captured by the black ajah.the healing he received at tar valon had caused holes in his memories. he's missing complete chunks of his life. a fact that left him obviously distressed. he went looking for a way to gain them back. after hearing of a ter'angreal doorway that lead into the realms of the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. mat found the aelfinn doorway where it’s said one can abstain three truths. he was told to go to rhuidean ( in the waste ) and the three truths he received from them were :: His fate is to marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons; to die and live again, and live once more a part of what was; and to give up half the light of the world to save the world. mat goes to the waste with rand and a large company of people. crossing into rhuidean with rand he finds the eelfinn doorway where he's allowed three requests. he asks to have the holes in his memories filled, To be free from the One Power and Aes Sedai, To be away from the Eelfinn and return to Rhuidean if they would not answer his questions. he's given a fox head medallion necklace that allows him complete protection from the one power, a weapon, an ashandarei along with the skill to use it, and a headful of memories of men long dead. men of war and adventure, giving him the talent and knowledge of things centuries past and battle.hanging. the band of the red hand. olver.being pushed form the doorway he's left hanging from a tree in rhuidean. where he nearly dies. but rand saves his life. after some time in the waste they finally cross back over the dragonwall.when the pattern draws him into his first battle, it’s against the against the fierce aiel shaido clan. the men he reluctantly led form the band of the red hand, swearing their loyalty to him. it’s the first of a long line of victories.the band of the red hand had not existed since the death of king aemon of manetheren. with a knack for finding battles and his luck always giving him the win mat and the band made a name for themselves. and have won some victories in the name of the dragon reborn.while on the move with his army mat "adopts" an orphan named olver, who follows him and band around everywhere he takes them.dragonsworn. prisoner in ebou dar. van luca's circus. prince of ravens.his band are considered by some to be known as dragonsworn. rand gives mat the dragon banner when he sends him on a mission to return elayne to andor. he ended up following her and nynaeve into ebou dar instead. determined much to their disdain to protect them. there is an attempt on their lives from the forsaken, who send a gholam after them and mat. mat sends them off but is trapped in the city himself.with a strange turn on bad luck mat found himself a prisoner to queen tylin of altara. stuck there with her even after the city falls to the seanchan mat uses anything he can to survive. he becomes known in ebou dar as tylin's toy or pet. all the while planning his escape. after detailing his plan and freeing some of the captured channelers the seanchan enslave he left the city. he took (kidnapped light ) a seanchan woman, tuon, heir to the seanchan empire, along with them. after discovering she was the daughter of the nine moons, the woman he's fated to marry.joining van luca's grand traveling circus as a cover to leave ebou dar and hide from the seanchan. he travels with them for some time. then he parts from them before being reunited with the band of the red hand. surrounded by seanchan armies, who mat discovers want to murder tuon, and with no way out. mat devises a plan to attack their armies and carve his way out with the band. in order to keep tuon safe he returns her to her trusted seanchan guard. before parting ways tuon declares mat her husband, giving him the title of the Prince of the Ravens.dragons. gholam. tower of ghenjei. general of the light. the last battle.after traveling for some time with the band mat arrives in andor. where elayne has taken the throne. having discovered on the road that dark friends are passing out images of him, declaring him a wanted man, he wears a disguise while there. he approaches elayne with plans for dragons (canons basically ) and gets her funding for them. there he signs the band into a contract of sorts with andor.the gholam having followed him to andor kills more of his men. leaving mat more determined to kill it before he leaves. having come up with a plan with some of his men and elayne, he manages to get rid of the gholam.he makes his way to the tower of ghenjei to rescue someone, leaving the band in andor. the tower is basically the portal into the eelfin and aelfinn's world. no one is known to have made it out alive. but after a loss and a lot of difficulty mat manages to find his way out and rescue who he had set out to.with the knowledge that the last battle is already here mat returns to ebou dar, the main seanchan base this side of the ocean. where he discovers another assassination plan for tuon. going to the palace to try to save her. from then on the rigid seanchan regime is shown to him, an attempt for him to follow said structure. in spite of his love for tuon mat doesn't agree with any of the seanchan ideas.with the last battle already happening around them mat helps rand broker peace with the seanchan. and comes into the battle leading the ever victorious army. soon after several failings of the other captains mat's given complete control over all the armies fighting in the last battle. with the memories and expertise in his head from the finn mat manages to lead the armies of the light to a victory.
